The Wissahickon Valley

The Wissahickon Valley

Here are a few more photos from Saturday’s trip to the Wissahickon valley in Fairmount Park.

From yesterday’s post:
Fairmount Park is no secret in Philadelphia. Consisting of 63 parks over 9,200 acres, the park system covers 10 percent of the city’s land, but makes for very different experiences, depending upon the places you visit.

Visiting Wissahickon Creek

Wissahickon Creek

Wissahickon Creek

Fairmount Park is no secret in Philadelphia. Consisting of 63 parks over 9,200 acres, the park system covers 10 percent of the city’s land, but makes for very different experiences, depending upon the places you visit.

Yesterday, we took a walk down Forbidden Drive, along the Wissahickon Creek, in the northwestern section of the park and the city.

Auto traffic is forbidden except for a couple of parking areas, so you will see nothing but walkers, hikers, bikers and an occasional rider on horseback.

Except for the occasional intrusion of air traffic passing overhead, it’s easy to forget you are in the fourth-largest urban area in America.

Slush of Death?

I just snapped this scene from my stoop in Center City.

I just snapped this scene from my stoop in Center City.

Maybe I live in some crazy, cosmic, no-snow triangle, but the street scene I just snapped here in Center City looks nothing like the local news headlines online here in Philadelphia.

Philly Digging Out From Winter Storm – A massive late winter storm moved…

Delaware Valley residents and commuters were walloped by a nor’easter on Monday.

Officially, 9.3 inches of snow has been measured at Philadelphia International Airport…

This is weather – not war, economics or politics. This should be easy.

For decades, I have been frustrated by editors who seemed uninterested in learning that what I saw on the street did not always support what they were reporting. I hope they find social media more difficult to deny.

The New England Holocaust Memorial

The New England Holocaust Memorial

While visiting Boston Saturday night, I stopped for a look at the New England Holocaust Memorial, and grabbed a few photos. From nehm.org:

The New England Holocaust Memorial was built to foster memory of and reflection on one of the great tragedies of our time, the Holocaust (Shoah). The effort was begun by a group of survivors of Nazi concentration camps who have found new homes and new lives in the Boston area. Dedicated in October 1995, over 3000 individuals and organizations from across the community joined in sponsoring the project. (more info)

A Quick Twitpic Experiment

John King in Philadelphia

John King in Philadelphia

It was sheer coincidence that brought me and two esteemed journalism colleagues into the Midtown restaurant in Center City Philly for lunch yesterday, and suddenly into the presence of a five-person CNN crew, apparently wrapping up after an interview session.

I don’t know John King and have no particular interest in the princes of media, but I thought some of my Twitter followers might be interested, so I grabbed this Twitpic and tweeted the link: CNN John King is at the Midtown in Center City Philly right now

After about an hour, there were only 75 views, so I sent another Tweet, linked to the same photo: I just posted a photo of a coffee cup and a pepper shaker

Again, the photo was viewed 75 about times in the next hour. Conclude what you will.
