Rest in Peace Mary

By Jim MacMillan

I honestly felt some loss when I learned that Mary Travers died last night, at first because attending a Peter, Paul and Mary performance will now never be crossed off my bucket list.

They were giants when I was a child – so, I can get nostalgic – and every time I spotted them in concert while surfing through public television stations during the last few decades, I would stop, watch the remainder of the program, and then usually tell the next person I saw that we really should go to see them sometime.

Today was worse. I try to remember to play a song before classes for students who arrive early, and since I was in a multimedia lab this time, I played this video in my own sort of celebratory remembrance.

Only one raised her hand firmly when I asked if anybody recognized the performers. First, I felt the usual twinge that comes when I remember that I am so much older than I think I am. Then, I felt bad for the others.

Another student seemed to take it hard when I reported the death. I guess Mary still makes a cool first impression.
